Every session has its own special energy, and Joel’s senior shoot is one I’ll always remember. From the very first conversation with his mom, Jamie, I could tell this session was going to be something unique and personal. As we started planning, I suggested they bring along any props that held meaning to Joel — items that would make the photos feel like him. That’s when his mom mentioned that Jole is a musician. He planned to bring his guitar, and casually added that he’d love to include his cello too, though she worried it might be a bit much to haul along.
Immediately, I felt a spark of excitement. A cello? Yes, please! I encouraged her to bring it, knowing that it could add such a rich, artistic layer to the images. I’d never had the chance to photograph a senior session with a cello before, and the creative possibilities were already swirling in my mind. When she agreed, I could hear the excitement in her voice, too — and from that moment, I knew we were going to make some magic together.
We chose Albuquerque’s Old Town as our backdrop, a place rich with that timeless New Mexican charm. Adobe walls, colorful tiles, rustic doors — every corner offered a beautiful frame for his story. Jole wanted the photos to feel distinctly New Mexican, and Old Town delivered in every way.
As we explored the winding streets, I got to know more about Jole. He’s not just a talented musician, but also thoughtful and down-to-earth. We chatted about his love for music and his plans after graduation. It turns out he’ll be heading off to Texas Tech in the fall of 2025 — Wreck ‘em! — and he’s excited for the new adventures waiting for him there.
Watching him switch between his guitar and his cello during the shoot was incredible. The way he handled each instrument, you could see his passion in every movement. It wasn’t just about posing; it was about capturing who he is in this moment — a young artist on the brink of new beginnings. His mom watched proudly from the sidelines, beaming every time Jole’s smile would slip through between shots.
There’s something really special about senior sessions like this. It’s not just about marking the end of high school; it’s about celebrating everything that’s brought them here — their passions, their hard work, and their dreams for what’s next.
By the end of the session, I felt so grateful to have been part of this milestone for Joel and his family. We captured some truly beautiful images that tell his story — guitar in hand, cello by his side, against the sunlit streets of Old Town.
